Fall is beginning to make it’s presence known. The trees are starting to blush, flip-flops are slowly being replaced by sensible, closed-toed shoes and the weather has a severe case of Attention Deficit Disorder.
Today started with a sunrise so beautiful it almost convinced me that getting in a car accident would be worth taking my eyes off the road just to watch it. Ever since then it’s dwindeled into gray dreariness that was pushed out of the way by blue sky, only to be overcome by a deluge that the Bible would be proud of, which was whipped away by gale force winds revealing more skies of blue which were swallowed up by giant black monster clouds roaring and flashing their weatherly wrath, which has ultimately lead to a sort of grey ambiguity. A meteorological purgatory if you will.
Oh yes, I can’t forget the other signals Fall has been slyly sending my way: Candy Corn Pumpkins (the best of all candy corn varieties) have found their way to the shelves of quality grocers everywhere, and Johann’s Bakery has started producing their sugar and cinnamon covered pumpkin donuts - Paired with warm apple cider, this is a force to battle productivity, wakefulness and all sorts of consciousness-required activities.
My musical tastes also tend to swing the way of more maudlin, melancholy and contemplative overtones; taking over for the soul-filled jazziness of the summer vibes. I find the likes of Bright Eyes, Damien Rice, Rachael Yamagata and Jeff Buckley pushing their way to the forefront of my playlists.
Fall is my favorite season. It signals the start of heavy blankets, thick books, hot food and deep movies. Everything about it - minus it signaling what follows, of course – makes it the most appealing season to my particular diposition. The crunching of fallen leaves, the deep rapturous colors of the trees, the mist over the lake from the cooling air over warm waters…it all just makes me……smile.
