Untimely Waking

Technically i should most likely be asleep, but 2 things stop me. One The Count of Monte Cristo is on ABC Family...of all places, and two, my new Ray LaMontagne CD needs listening to.
All in all The newest Hollywood version of Monte Cristo (book not sandwhich) is a tollerable translation of such an epic and timeless tale. It is incredibly hollywoodized and massive secions of the story have been cut, combined, or brutalized by teh screenwriteres but i find its jsut a romping good tale of swashbuckling and revenge. I probably wont stay up watching it.
As to Ray LaMontagne....amazing musician...still not sure how it measures up to his first album, but the song "You Can Bring Me Flowers" is a wonderful bluesy little piece that may end up being my fav on the album.
Yeah, i dont have a whole lot to say at 11 pm on a sunday night, just fell like proclaiming to the world why i'm not in bed sleeping......ok so even if i was in bed i would be reading this great book "The TIme Traveler's Wife" which i think ive mentioned befoer...it is a great book, go rent it....just dont try and figure out how teh lady wrote it..i have no idea. It does make one contemplate the theory of cause and effect, fate, and human interaction.

So in Wal-Mart tonight i had a small epiphany on a new process for some illustrations/ paintings. i will post when i get around to experimenting with it....it does require me spending time in fabric/ craft stores..not something im accustomed to..... we will see.

ok i think ive given enough media recommendation in teh above but i will give you one more. Ray Bradbury's short story "The Homecoming" was re-released with illustrations by Dave McKean...go get it....its amazing!!!! I haven't even gotten around to reading it yet (though that may have something to do wiht having like 6 books going at the same time) i just have looked and looked and looked at the illustrations.

Small Things

Yes, it's true, 2 blogs in the same day....hopefully your concept of reality hasnt been overturned at too sharp of an angle.
I dont't know; the combination of today's interminable hours spent in front of a computer monitor, trying to be productive while continually being interupted, and the completely contrasted, relaxing evening jsut put me in teh mood to jot down a few words here before finding my way to a severe state of unconsciousness.

So, we all know what i do during the day, or you can surmise as much by perusing past posts, but the evenings may be a mystery as by the time i get home i am usually not in a mood to type anything of meanign or interest. Tonight though...tonight, was a relaxing night as only those rare and prescious evenings where you throw all care and concern out the window and jsut enjoy yourself in all teh small things in life. Tonight after a full day at the office, followed by a meeting with clients for my freelance business i set all my crap down and made myself a quick but tasty meal. while making this bit of scrumptious fare i finally took the time to figure out how to remove teh screens from my living room windows. This discovery was followed by me setting up a chair and table at the window and i spent my dinner reading with my feet out the window, eating whatever it is i ended up cobbling together from leftovers found in my fridge. after that i took the long scenic route through town to return a movie that i never even had a chance to watch.

These small things , including the sopriphic music of Nick Drake while im writing this just add up to a state of wonderous serenity that is just hard to find in today's maddeningly fast paced life.

Anywho, i just thought i'd stop for a moment and recommend you also pause and just enjoy that which you never leave yourself time to do. Whatever that may be.

oh yeah, go get Nick Drake's album......jsut amazing.

Fall

Today is the first day of Fall, my absolute favorite season, at least it is for me.
Yeah, i'm sure the calendar is telling you different, that it isn't the first day of fall, but, well, i don't generally go by the calendar on most things so why start now, right?

I'm sure your curious why, for me, today is the first day of fall. Well, I will tell you - I had my first Pumpkin donut from Johann's Bakery here in Petoskey, Michigan. Now this may seem insignificant to most of you, or you may wonder why my first day of fall doesn't coincide with the color change of the leaves, or the moderate temperature decline, and that's natural as those are some of the more natural answers to why someone likes fall. I do love those things, but when the local bakeries and coffee shops start making their fall themed treats, well, that is just confirmation that my idea of when fall should start is not completely absurd. And in all seriousness, how better to start such an excellent season with such an excellent treat as a pumpkin donut covered in cinnamon and sugar....pure delight.

Along with fall comes a crazy, little thing we have been doing the last few years here in Northern Michigan called The C.S.Lewis Festival. This is pretty much a month long celebration of the life and works of one of my favorite authors, CS Lewis.
Somehow i find myself on the board of directors for this annual festival. An honor for such a youngin as myself as the rest of the board is older by at least 15 yrs or more. Ayways, being on the board has given me some crazy opportunities i never thought id get, such as talking to one of teh founders of Walden Media and hanging out in the pub with the step son of CS Lewis, Douglas Gresham. As the creative director it has also given me a chance to get my own art into the public.

me and aslan

Lately, for promotional events for this year's festival i have been doing these live paintings at different festivals and such throughout the summer. They are a blast and really stretch me. The above is the first live painting i have done in that much color and detail, i'm pretty happy with it. The following pic is of the second one i did the same day that didnt come off as easily as the first one. it took me a while sitting in my apartment in the week after the event to finish this one up.

Lewis/Aslan

Speaking of unusual experiences and opporunities brought about by the festival- it looks as if i will be getting some pieces such as the above and some future works in the front window of The Gaslight Gallery here in Petoskey for a portion of the festival. Now i just have to figure out how to frame 2-3 3'x5' paintings.

well i'll finish this sucker up with a quick couple of recommendations as is my custom. Both Ray LaMontagne and Bob Dylan came out with new albums last week, and i would recommend them both, also pick up the book "The Time Traveler's Wife". im over 100 pages in and so far its amazing...a wee bit crazy and you really have to pay attention, but an excellent piece of fiction thus far.
