Yeah, i'm sure the calendar is telling you different, that it isn't the first day of fall, but, well, i don't generally go by the calendar on most things so why start now, right?
I'm sure your curious why, for me, today is the first day of fall. Well, I will tell you - I had my first Pumpkin donut from Johann's Bakery here in Petoskey, Michigan. Now this may seem insignificant to most of you, or you may wonder why my first day of fall doesn't coincide with the color change of the leaves, or the moderate temperature decline, and that's natural as those are some of the more natural answers to why someone likes fall. I do love those things, but when the local bakeries and coffee shops start making their fall themed treats, well, that is just confirmation that my idea of when fall should start is not completely absurd. And in all seriousness, how better to start such an excellent season with such an excellent treat as a pumpkin donut covered in cinnamon and sugar....pure delight.
Along with fall comes a crazy, little thing we have been doing the last few years here in Northern Michigan called The C.S.Lewis Festival. This is pretty much a month long celebration of the life and works of one of my favorite authors, CS Lewis.
Somehow i find myself on the board of directors for this annual festival. An honor for such a youngin as myself as the rest of the board is older by at least 15 yrs or more. Ayways, being on the board has given me some crazy opportunities i never thought id get, such as talking to one of teh founders of Walden Media and hanging out in the pub with the step son of CS Lewis, Douglas Gresham. As the creative director it has also given me a chance to get my own art into the public.

Lately, for promotional events for this year's festival i have been doing these live paintings at different festivals and such throughout the summer. They are a blast and really stretch me. The above is the first live painting i have done in that much color and detail, i'm pretty happy with it. The following pic is of the second one i did the same day that didnt come off as easily as the first one. it took me a while sitting in my apartment in the week after the event to finish this one up.

Speaking of unusual experiences and opporunities brought about by the festival- it looks as if i will be getting some pieces such as the above and some future works in the front window of The Gaslight Gallery here in Petoskey for a portion of the festival. Now i just have to figure out how to frame 2-3 3'x5' paintings.
well i'll finish this sucker up with a quick couple of recommendations as is my custom. Both Ray LaMontagne and Bob Dylan came out with new albums last week, and i would recommend them both, also pick up the book "The Time Traveler's Wife". im over 100 pages in and so far its amazing...a wee bit crazy and you really have to pay attention, but an excellent piece of fiction thus far.
end
